Maintaining Your Newly Refinished Wood Floors: Care Tips For Long-Lasting Beauty

Advice From JRK Flooring to Keep Your Floors Looking Their Best

You’re here because you’re ready to work with JRK Flooring for wood floor refinishing, and you want to ensure you keep your updated floors in the best possible condition for as long as you can.

You’ve come to the right place. In this blog post, we’ll describe steps to keep your refinished hardwood floors looking pristine to ensure you won’t need to have your floors refinished again any time soon.

If you haven’t already, request a free refinishing estimate from JRK Flooring, serving the greater Kansas City area.

Let Your Refinished Hardwood Floors Cure First

After layers of stain and sealant are applied and the wood floor refinishing work is complete, wait at least 24 to 48 hours before walking on your floors or moving furniture back into the room. If you don’t, you risk scratches or an uneven finish, which would require another round of refinishing to repair.

Use Rugs to Prevent Wear and Tear

Place area or runner rugs in high-traffic areas. Consider rugs in hallways, in front of essential kitchen appliances, and under furniture where your family gathers. Don’t forget a rug in the entryway of your home.

Read our blog to learn how to determine the right size area rug for your space.

Take Your Shoes Off

When you and your family come home from errands, work, school, or leisure activities, take off your shoes at the door. The bottoms of your shoes track in dirt and even bacteria and viruses. By removing your shoes, you’ll prevent damage caused by moisture, abrasive debris, and in winter, ice melt.

Never wear stiletto heels or sports cleats in your home, even rubberized ones. They can ding and damage your floors.

Keep slippers by the front door and change into them as you enter. You can keep a few spare pairs for guests as well. Shoe covers work well for home services providers who visit to perform repairs or give estimates.

Quickly Clean Up Spills

The longer liquid sits on wood floors, the more likely it will form a stain. Although freshly refinished floors are fully sealed, certain liquids can break down the sealant. Clean up spills and pet accidents as quickly as you can to prevent damage.

Clean Regularly Using the Right Products

Dirt and debris can scratch your floors, so sweeping and mopping regularly can prevent damage. Use a soft-bristled broom or a damp microfiber mop – never wet. Do not use steam cleaners, which can cause warping, splitting, and cracking. If you must vacuum, use a machine designed for hard surfaces, without a beater bar, which can scratch your floors.

When mopping, use a water-based floor cleaner designed especially for hardwoods. Never use products that contain vinegar, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or ammonia. At JRK Flooring, we recommend Bona brand cleaners, but there are plenty of budget-friendly options on the market that will work on your newly refinished wood floors.

Lift, Don’t Drag Furniture

Prevent deep scratches from heavy furniture by picking up pieces instead of dragging or sliding them. The weight of your sofa or curio cabinet can damage your floors if you drag or slide it.

If you must slide your furniture, use plastic sliders to protect your floor. Always add felt pads to the feet of furniture that sit directly on your wood floors.
